It seems to be a given that academics do traditionally think. But in the
past and the present many scholars have seen themselves confronted with
the tension between what we see/think and what we do/want to do. This
tension has not been resolved, but has become even more pertinent
recently. The two concepts "Acting" and "Spectating" conceptualize this
tension, and this is why we chose them as the theoretical concepts of the
first CASA meeting.

|
- What is the relation between thought and action, between
theory and practice?
- How can the communication between institutionalized thought and research
– academia – and social movements be improved?
- Can the university be a force that is inspired by, and feeds into
society?
- Is the university a place where students learn to think critically and
independently, or where they are being ‘educated’ and shaped according to
certain standards?
- Who shapes the conditions of research, teaching, and the diffusion of
knowledge, and how?
The CASA meeting in July 2004 offered a space to discuss these questions
under three different headings:
1. UNIVERSITY AND SOCIETY
Does academia have a public function and responsibility? If so, what are
they? Can the knowledge gained in academia be made available to society at
large? And, how can the dialogue between the university, social movements
and society be revived?
2. ACTING - SPECTATING.
How is what we see linked to what we do? And how is what we do linked to
what we see? In desiring to right a wrong, we perform an action, and (can)
come close to forcing
our views on others. If we don’t do anything but merely watch, we become
accomplices Is there any way we can solve this dilemma? What do
philosophy, ethics, political theory etc. have to say about questions of
acting, spectating, neutrality, objectivity? And, what can we do today
with the thoughts of the “old masters”?
3. PRIVATIZATION OF EDUCATION SYSTEMS.
In what way has privatization affected different aspects of research and
teaching? What are the strategies of privatization and what are its
consequences? And, what exactly are
the alternatives? |
